NZ Music Promoter Profile - Tania Dean Print E-mail

We asked Tania Dean from NZ On Air a few questions about her role in New Zealand Music Promotions. To find out what Tania had to say about her job read below!!

TaniaWhat is your job and who do you work for?

I work for New Zealand On Air and my role is New Zealand Music Promotions. The main job I do is to get more New Zealand music played on commercial radio.

What does a normal work day entail for you?

A normal day for me consists of meeting with radio programmers, music TV, artists, managers and music industry people. I liase with Auckland radio stations about NZ songs they could play on their stations. Meetings with artists and managers are about how to get commercial airplay and funding from NZ On Air.

How did you get into the music industry – any specific training?

I didn’t have any specific training for the music industry. My first job was at Sony Music in the finance dept and from there I moved in to the promotions dept, where I worked for 4 years and learnt on the job. After 5 years at Sony I was lucky enough to get this job at NZ On Air and have been here for 5 years.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is getting a song you love added to commercial radio and seeing it take off from there. Equally I love being involved in the New Recording Artist Scheme, which is where we are trying to break new artists at radio.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

The most challenging part of the job is working out which songs we think people will like to hear on the radio. It’s also the fun part because it’s always changing.

Do you have any advice for people who want to get into your field of work?

For people wanting to get in to the industry I suggest making good contacts and taking opportunities as they present themselves.
